The New York Times bestselling author of the On Dublin Street series returns to Hartwell, Delaware—the perfect place to get away from it all, and find what you never knew you needed....

Bailey Hartwell has many reasons to feel content—her successful business, a close circle of friends, and her steady boyfriend…even if their romance feels staid after ten years without a serious commitment. The only challenge in her life comes in the form of sexy businessman Vaughn Tremaine. She thinks the ex-New Yorker acts superior and that he considers her a small-town nobody. But when Bailey’s blindsided by a betrayal, she’s shocked to discover Vaughn is actually a decent guy.

Vaughn admires Bailey’s free spirit, independence, and loyalty. As his passion for her has grown, his antagonism toward her has only worsened. Every little thing Bailey does seduces him. But when Vaughn’s painful emotional past makes him walk away in fear he will hurt her, it opens an old wound in Bailey, and she uncharacteristically retreats.

Once Vaughn begins to realize he’s made the biggest mistake of his life, he has no choice but to fight like he’s never fought before to convince Bailey that the love they’ve found together only comes around once in a lifetime….

Young’s second Hart’s Boardwalk contemporary suffers from some shaky characterization and a stock conflict between tradition and progress. When Bailey Hartwell walks in on her boyfriend of 10 years having sex with someone else, she dumps him and refocuses on self-care and making her inn a success. The last person she wants sympathy from is Vaughn Tremaine, the wealthy and conceited outsider who recently built a luxury hotel on the historic boardwalk of her resort hometown, Hartwell, Del. Their mutual hostility gives way to sexual connection when Vaughn saves her from an attack by the unscrupulous Devlin clan, who have their eyes on her inn. Despite the passion, both Vaughn and Bailey are incapable of opening up, and they always end up either arguing and falling into bed. This equivocation is a weak spot for the characters, who stray well beyond conflicted to unbelievably inconsistent. The arrival of Bailey’s spoiled sister, and Vaughn’s long absence to deal with other properties, provide additional drama. Young alternates viewpoints between Vaughn and Bailey, spelling out why they cannot commit and how they react to events. Despite some flaws, the plot unfolds evenly with sufficient intrigue and leads to satisfying conclusions for fans of contemporary small-town romances. Agent: Lauren Abramo, Dystel & Goderich Literary.

Narrators Angelica Lee and Tad Branson complement this steamy romantic story. Vaughn Tremaine comes to the boardwalk town of Hartwell, Delaware, to escape Manhattan. But his peace evaporates when he meets outspoken Bailey Hartwell. After he tells her their perfect night together was a mistake, he soon discovers he must risk his heart to win her back. Branson portrays the sexy business magnate with a powerful and confident presence. Listeners will see the beautiful ocean and meet the cozy boardwalk community through Vaughn's eyes. Lee inhabits Bailey by showing her enthusiasm and her loyalty to her friends and community. Shifts to new scenes from Lee are not always smooth, which may be a production issue. But she transitions easily from lighthearted to smoldering tones. S.H. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
