International Bestseller!

"Dizzyingly wonderful . . . a perfectly constructed work of fiction, with audacious twists . . . Collins plays her own game here with perfect skill." — The Times (UK)

An intricate and utterly spellbinding literary epic brimming with enchantment, mystery, and dark secrets from the highly acclaimed author of the #1 international bestseller The Binding.

If your life was based on a lie, would you risk it all to tell the truth?

At Montverre, an ancient and elite academy hidden high in the mountains, society's best and brightest are trained for excellence in the grand jeu—the great game—an arcane and mysterious competition that combines music, art, math, poetry, and philosophy. Léo Martin once excelled at Montverre but lost his passion for scholarly pursuits after a violent tragedy. He turned to politics instead and became a rising star in the ruling party, until a small act of conscience cost him his career. Now he has been exiled back to Montverre, his fate uncertain.

But this rarified world of learning Léo once loved is not the same place he remembers. Once the exclusive bastion of men, Montverre's most prestigious post is now held by a woman: Claire Dryden, also known as the Magister Ludi, the head of the great game. At first, Léo feels an odd attraction to the magister—a mysterious, eerily familiar connection—though he's sure they've never met before.

As the legendary Midsummer Game approaches—the climax of the academy's year—long-buried secrets rise to the surface and centuries-old traditions are shockingly overturned.

A highly imaginative and intricately crafted literary epic, The Betrayals confirms Bridget Collins as one of the most inventive and exquisite new voices in speculative fiction.

The four narrators of this story speak in the voices of two parents and their two children, all of whom, through their own faulty memories, are reflecting on the vacation that changed their lives forever. Filled with OCD, adultery, cancer, medical quacks, and characters who are unable to speak honestly, this story is made palatable by the distinct voices and personalities the narrators bring to the table. Kate Lock, as Daisy, speaks in the voice of someone who has obsessive-compulsive disorder, speeding up as she enumerates her compulsions and revisits memories of that vacation. David Thorpe, as David, is the detached son who is tired of being the dependable one. Sarah Ovens, the wife scorned by both her husband and her best friend, has a distant tone. Huw Parameter, as ex-husband Nick, speaks more as an observer than a catalyst. N.E.M. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine

Monteverre is an academy that teaches the grand jeu--a strange, ancient, and mysterious art. But it is in a tenuous position in this world where the ruling Party is cracking down on religion, particularly Christianity, and enforcing a society of fear, surveillance, and threat. After challenging the decisions of the Party, Minister of Culture Lo is exiled in disgrace to his alma mater and forced to relive haunted memories of his teenage years--and the passionate rivalry he had with fellow student Carfax. To make things worse, Claire Dryden, the first woman to teach at the school and holder of its highest office, grates at his arrival, and a mysterious sobbing ghost of a girl is haunting the school's halls. While at first Collins' novel may feel scattered across perspectives and story lines, the reader is in for a treat: all these mysteries converge in shocking, suspenseful ways. By the time the novel draws to a close, the weave of the story and the tight net of a powerful rivals-to-lovers romance will have captured the reader in their web.
