De temperamento inquieto y caracter humoristico, el eclectico saxofonista, clarinetista, compositor y escritor, en 1067 fue fundador, junto a Armando Romeu de la orquesta Cubana de musica moderna y mas tarde, con Chucho Valdes, del explosivo, innovador e influyente grupo Irakere. Ganador hasta ahora de nueve premios Grammy en las mas diversas categorias.
